Singapore awards scholarships to Bachelors students of public administration with spirit and brains
29 Dec 2007
The Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore is looking for talented Bachelors students for the Master’s courses in public administration and in public policy. Scholarships are to be made available to the best applicants. A competition will be held and the scholarships will be awarded to the applicants with the highest scores.
Singapore is a strictly regulated society in which everything is focused on quality and performance. The meritocratic model of the city state was created by former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, after whom the School of Public Policy is named. These days, Lee is known as the ‘Minister Mentor’.
Singapore is one of the few Asian societies in which absolute poverty has been eradicated. The city state has its own, entirely independent, system of social services which is not based on insurance models but on the creation of savings facilities. The government plays a very pro-active role and also tries to influence citizen behaviour. Road pricing or consistent policies of discouragement in the case of smoking and other forms of unhealthy behaviour have been part of everyday life for decades.
This is a clear opportunity to study, from the inside, how an Asian society is enjoying the benefits of prosperity. The education provided at the National University of Singapore is of a high quality and the admission requirements are correspondingly strict. More information can be found on the site of the National University of Singapore.
