Dr Jasper Vrugt of the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics at the Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) has won the 2004-2007 Hydrology Prize for a groundbreaking article he published.
The prize is awarded every three years by the Netherlands Hydrological Society (NHV). The jury praised Vrugt for his 'top grade research' and referred to his paper as 'a scientific master-piece broadly acknowledged by the community and strengthening international appreciation for Dutch hydrological research'.
Two weeks earlier, Dr Vrugt was also winner of the Early Career Award for Soil Physics of the Soil Science Society of America (SSSA). Currently, he is working on the development of better and faster algorithms as a J. Robert Oppenheimer Postdoctoral Fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, USA.
Since his PhD graduation, he has also been working with the research group in IBED Computational Geo-ecology on the adaptation of his methods in the development of theories on subjects as diverse as river flooding and the dynamics of bird migration.
Research director Prof. Willem Bouten responded by saying, “The Netherlands is a knowledge-based society, and I therefore feel it is an important task of my research group to invest in the education of young scientists who will be the national and international research leaders of tomorrow. I am pleased to see that this policy is proving successful.”
