Nuffic expects a full World Forum Convention Centre for Day of the International Student
19 Oct 2007
StudentBase online community to be officially launched at gathering of international students.
StudentBase, the online meeting place for international students in the Netherlands and for Dutch students considering studying abroad, will be officially launched on Saturday, 27 October 2007. The launch will take place at the World Forum Convention Centre in The Hague on the Day of the International Student 2007 (DIS). Both the DIS and StudentBase are initiatives of Nuffic, the Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in Higher Education.
The organizers are expecting a full house at next week’s event. The Netherlands is currently home to just under 50,000 international students from all corners of the globe. Two thousand of them will be travelling to The Hague to attend the DIS at the World Forum Convention Centre.
With a motto of ‘Linking Knowledge Worldwide’, Nuffic encourages students to gain international experience. It does this through two permanent campaigns: Studyin and Wilweg. Studyin is aimed at getting students from other countries to study at a Dutch university, while Wilweg helps inform Dutch students who are thinking about studying or getting work experience abroad. The Day of the International Student is a derivative of both campaigns. With its head office in The Hague, Nuffic maintains a network of Netherlands Education Support Offices (Nesos) in Beijing, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, Mexico City and Taipei. Preparations for new offices in Bangkok, Delhi and Moscow are currently in full swing.
StudentBase
The day has two aims. Firstly, it is an expression of our appreciation for international students who have chosen to follow a programme of study in the Netherlands, often entirely self-funded. Secondly, an event of this kind is a great opportunity for participants to meet other people from their own country studying at other higher education institutions. StudentBase is an extension of this concept. Research has shown that students learn most from each other. The idea of StudentBase is to bring international students into contact with each other, so they can share information and their enthusiasm for studying in Holland with others.
Connecting cultures
Many DIS visitors – and international students in general – stay in the Netherlands for a relatively short time. The theme of Connecting Cultures has therefore been chosen to unite all elements of the programme. Various workshops will be available, ranging from practical aspects such as applying for jobs internationally, to cultural things such as making your own pan flute and Brazilian dance. The evening session will be a big party event with DJ Bus and the band R.O.O.O.M. with singer Romagna Sasabone.
