Spain’s research council praises Utrecht as a leading knowledge town
01 Apr 2008
Utrecht remains the leading knowledge centre in the Netherlands, far outpacing towns like Amsterdam and Groningen.
This can be partly attributed to Utrecht University’s excellent mark for the online distribution of publications and research. As a result, Utrecht University is the most high-profile university in the Netherlands. Utrecht University ranks 63rd in the world. These are the findings of the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
In addition to Utrecht University’s leading position, Utrecht’s high ranking is also due in part to the high marks received by the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU).
Utrecht University: best scientific research
Not only did Utrecht University fare well according to the CSIC Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, the German Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE) considers Utrecht University’s research programmes in mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology among the best in Europe. Utrecht University ranks as one of the four best universities, together with ETH Zurich, Imperial College London and Cambridge University, of the leading 56 European universities assessed as part of the CHE survey. These universities receive excellent marks for mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology.
Excellence categories
The CHE survey does not result in a list of rankings, but rather excellence categories (i.e. top, middle and bottom). Utrecht University and the three other universities in the top group scored well in each of the four disciplines. Three Dutch universities were included in the middle group (i.e. Leiden University, University of Amsterdam (UvA) and University of Groningen).
