3.5 million grant to Heino Falcke for astronomy research

07 Aug 2008

Radboud University Nijmegen Professor of Radio Astronomy and Astroparticle Physics Heino Falcke has reeled in an astronomical research subsidy. Falcke will receive an ERC Advanced Grant of EUR 3.5 million.

The Advanced Grant is a new research subsidy organized by the European Research Council (ERC). No sooner was it established than it became the most prestigious European research grant an individual researcher can receive. Individual grant amounts vary, generally averaging about EUR 2.5 million; research project terms are five years.

The first ERC Advanced Grant awards were announced this past week, with Heino Falcke, Professor of Radio Astronomy and Astroparticle Physics at Radboud University Nijmegen, among the lucky recipients. His especially high award amount includes one million in additional funding to pay for equipment.

Radboud University Nijmegen Endowed Professor of Asteroseismology Conny Aerts was another of the recipients, with an ERC Advanced Grant of EUR 2.5 million. She will be using the research money for her work at KU Leuven, where she is also a professor and does the majority of her research work.
