International students debate our planet’s political future in Amsterdam
10 Jan 2008
Can the United Nations take the lead in stopping global warming or will the United States stand in the way of sustainable change, as they did in Bali in December 2007? Can the UN fight cybercrime and is China ready to make concessions on Tibet in the run-up to Olympic Games?
These and other current global issues are the focus of the 11th United Nations International Student Conference of Amsterdam (UNISCA), which is a simulation of the United Nations assembly. It will be attended by 250 talented students from six continents, who will come together to discuss the political future of our planet. The students will debate the issues from the point of view of their own countries and try to propose creative solutions to current problems.
The outcomes of the conference will be examined at the Round Table session on Friday, 18 January 2008 by leading experts Cees Hamelink (former personal advisor to Kofi Annan), Prof. Louise Fresco (former Deputy Director-General for Agriculture at the UN in Rome, currently Professor of Sustainable Development at the University of Amsterdam) and Maurits Cohen (Director of the War Trauma Foundation).
UNISCA is an initiative of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The resolutions of the conference will be aggregated and sent to relevant officials at the UN, including the Permanent Representation of the Netherlands to the UN in New York and Geneva. See also: www.unisca.org
